Formula 1 has confirmed that the Canadian GP will move from its traditional June slot to May starting in the 2026 season, in an effort to reduce inefficient transatlantic travel.
Following the announcement of Monaco’s contract extension through 2031 this week, it was revealed that the iconic race will move from its usual slot at the end of May to the first weekend of June starting in 2026.
This change has led to a reshuffling of other races, including the Canadian Grand Prix, which will now take place on the third or fourth weekend of May from 2026 onwards.
The decision to move the event was made after discussions between the race promoter, Octane Racing Group, and key stakeholders such as the Canadian government, Tourism Quebec, and the City of Montreal.
The change aims to help F1 better organize its calendar and make it more sustainable, with the race now scheduled earlier in the season.
By moving Canada’s race to May, F1 hopes to group its North American races, such as the Miami Grand Prix, which will likely be paired with Montreal in a block. These changes are expected to be officially confirmed after approval from the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council.
This will help reduce the number of transatlantic flights for the teams, which will cut down on carbon emissions—a step toward F1’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
The shift will also create a more efficient race calendar by allowing a smoother, uninterrupted European leg, with the Canadian GP now better aligned.

Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1 said: “I am incredibly grateful to the promoter and all of the government stakeholder partners involved in the Canadian Grand Prix, from the local, to the provincial and national government.
“We applaud the tremendous effort from all involved to accelerate the temporary build of the event, to be ready to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in the past.
“The change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel.
“Our Net Zero by 2030 commitment continues to be a priority for us as a sport and it is thanks to changes like this that we are on track to hitting our goal.”
Jean-Philippe Paradis, CEO of Octane Racing Group, added: “This change in the schedule is a major step in our commitment, as well as Formula 1’s, toward a more sustainable future. It demonstrates our desire to combine sporting performance and event organization with environmental responsibility.
“We are determined to offer our fans, our communities, and our loyal audience a unique and enriched experience, in addition to extending the summer season for Montreal.
“The date change thus fully integrates into the dynamic strategic vision put in place by our team, with the collaboration of our stakeholders, which is fully focused on delivering an amazing Canadian Grand Prix experience in a more sustainable and inclusive environment.”
